What is Ocoee, FL Known For?

Ocoee, FL, is known for its unique historical beginning as a refuge for a group of enslaved people stricken with malaria. Dr. J.D. Starke, himself infected with malaria, took the enslaved people to the north side of a wooded lake in the mid-1850s hoping to find clean air and water. This group soon became a village called Starke Lake – the name still holding for the lake today. 

After the Civil War, the population began to grow with Confederate soldiers and their families. One of the most prominent members of this group was Captain Bluford Sims, who made his home in what is now known as downtown Ocoee, FL. He re-named the area after a river in Tennessee where he grew up – Ocoee. After settling into the area, he began working on budding wild orange trees, and this citrus growth has continued to this day.
