What is Sanford Known For?

When it comes to finding a new location to raise your family, it is often important to live in a place that has a rich history as well as proximity to a variety of great amenities. Living in Sanford can provide you with all of that and more.

As with many cities throughout Florida and the rest of the United States, Sanford began as a Native American settlement. First, it belonged to the Jororo Indians who were then replaced by the Seminoles. After being acquired by Americans from the Spanish, the area was soon set up as a major water port and transportation hub. This is how it led to being called the “Historic Waterfront Gateway City” as well as “The Gateway City to South Florida.”

As expected from the region, Sanford became a part of the citrus empire and the largest shipper of oranges. Following a fire, an outbreak of yellow fever, and the Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895, the citrus farmers had to diversify, which led to the growing of celery. In fact, Sanford is also known as the “Celery City.”

Sanford has been the home of a variety of notable people. Jackie Robinson also first stepped out onto the professional baseball field in Sanford in 1946 as a part of a racially-integrated baseball team.
